I am feeling upset since yesterday after learning about the teenager whose mom died in a private hospital where she was brought in after an accident on the road. It was not her passing away that upsets me most although I am not numbed in my senses because these cases happened everyday but rather the circumstances how his mom died.

From local newspapers report, this boy is going to take legal action against the hospital for refusing to treat his mom until he pays a fee or deposit of ten thousand dollars! Obviously this poor boy could not raise the funds and in the course of raising the money? Or perhaps begging the medical personnels, his mom passed away. I really do not know what to say. I can undersatnd why private hospital insists on payment first before treatment because there are quite a few cases where after treatment, the patient cannot pay.

What I feel upset is to see this trend happening in my life time. Back in the 60’s 70’s or even 80’s most people go to the Government Hospital and receive cheap and even free medical treatment. Especially in cases like accidents, emergencies, no one demands payment upfront. They just do their job and that is try to save a life. I can also understand why hospitals are privatized and so there was a surge of private hospitals mushrooming in my country. Health Insurance become a necesity due to the high cost of medical treatment. For whatever the reason, I empathize with this boy having to see his mom slipped into death and totally helpless to do anything. I just wonder how the medical people there felt. I remembered a movie titled John Q, where John had a similar experience and he held-up the hospital to demand treatment for his son!

How will this incident affect this boy? A hatred or should I say rebel against Society, Government, Hospital or maybe Authorities. Perhaps to him money becomes so very very important and he become obssesed with it and obtain money by whatever means, telling himself that he will never be caught in such a situation again? I don’t know. Hopefully his hurting soul receives healing from a Gracious God.

Today, I see this happening in real life and in my country. I do not want to dig into the pro’s and con’s, the rights and the wrongs of this issue! I understand there are many. What I want to know is morally, can we allow such things to happen? Because of money? For being right? I don’t have an answer and I can only feel very sad in my conscience. So God please help me.

Malaysian Constitution on Trial

On 30th May 2007, our highest court decision on Lina Joy’s case will be announced. Many Malaysians are very keen to know what the outcome will be. In Malaysia there are two sets of Law, one is the Islamic Syariah Law and the other our Constitutional Law.

Lina Joy’s case started in 1998 where as an ex-Muslim, she wanted her National Identity Card to reflect her new Faith which is Christianity. Lina was previously a Muslim. Her application for that changed was denied and hence the court case which went on for several years now.

If you want to have more details on this please visit Eileen Ng at Associated Press.

To me the outcome on Wednesday is more of our Malaysian Constitution being on Trial because according to our Constitution, freedom of worship is granted to each and every citizen of Malaysia.

Why I Worked From Home

May 28, 2007 | 3 Comments

Visited a fellow Malaysian and a blogger who calls herself Clonic and she posted a very good post on the above caption. For me and my wife, the main driving force is circumstances! Ever since Rock’s stroke, we are very much home-bound and the social circles we used to join are distant past although it was just coming to one and a half years now. Before Rock had the stroke, I was working as a part-time Property Manager. One day Rock reminded me that I promised to take her to do some travelling far and wide after my ‘retirement’ in 1998, but ever since I got involved with this part-time job, it looked like our travelling plans were taking a backseat. So I resigned from that job and planned our holidays. We could only manged two trips then the stroke struck.

Around late 2006, or around Christmas to be exact, I met Doris and her DH at a Christmas gathering and learnt from her about blogging and she encouraged me to start a blog and earn some money online. That was great news to me for we need to earn some income to subsidize for our daily sustenance to help slow down the dwindling funds in our retirement savings.

Honestly, I prefer to work in an office environment. There are more interaction with people and you feel not so lonely, not so trapped within your home, as Clonic discovered. Yes, in an office environment you have to put on some sort of a front for the sake of cultural conformity but I guess if it does not forced you to sacrifice your personal values, one can get by. Of course the office politics can be quite exasperating.

The positive aspects of working from home are plenty too, like you work at your own pace and time. Especially for moms they can take care of their children be a home-maker and earn some cash on the side. I have heard of aquite a number of people earning 4 figures income monthly! This is more felxible than flexi-time practisced by companies outside. Moreover you decide how much time and how much you want to earn. I believe that working from home is very suitable for retirees! It offers us an opportunity to earn an income with some self-respect, dignity intact. I can understand what retirees have to go through when they went for job interviews. Most come back feeling rejected, discarded, and of not much use to the present system. I am not complaining but is just the way the world goes round and round.
