The ISA Fast

September 28, 2008 | Leave a Comment

Today's news carried the story of Opposition MP Theresa Kok's parent's home had two Molotov Cocktails thrown into the compound sometime early this morning. Fortunately no one was hurt and no serious damaged to the house except for some broken pieces of glass scattered around. I am rather troubled by such actions. Police do not know who did it and hopefully they can catch the person who did it. A series of statements by the Malaysian or Barisan Government officials on Theresa Kok were quite amusing if not so pathetic. For non-Malaysian readers, a bit of background information will help to make you understand better the events that happened. Theresa Kok was 'arrested' under our Internal Security Act (ISA) for purportedly making a call to two Mosques to tone down the 'Azan Call' which is the Islamic Call for Prayers. Theresa Kok denied any involvement in this and even the two Mosques concerned supported Theresa's statement. If I am not mistaken Theresa was detained for a couple of days. Upon her release from the ISA detention, she made a police report against those who accused her in this issue. Of course the police are now investigating and we are patiently waiting for the outcome of their investigation to see whether justice be done or just die off. Certain Government Official said that Theres was NOT under arrest but being taken in for her own protection! I presume the police must have had information or evidence that Theresa's life was in danger or else they would not have taken her in for her own protection. Then when Theresa was released, she complained about the food being served was horrible and there was again a hue an cry over the inhuman treatment of detainees! Another Government Official came out explaining that as 'criminals' what do you expect? So now we are totally confused! Was Theresa taken in for her own protection or taken in as a 'criminal' which in this case would be causing security threat to the country. This again is not proven but based on certain people making an accusation! I find the whole thing so ridiculous and I wonder what sort of people we have in our Government. Interpreting our 'Laws' as they deem fit or convenient? Well, one lesson in life I have learned is that if you want to lie, you need to have a very good memory or else something you said at a later date will expose your lie! Coming back to the Molokov Cocktail incident, I am very concern! Theresa Kok's release from ISA by the police sort of exonerated her involvement and yet there are still those who prefer to take the law in their own hands and tried to implement 'justice' or 'retribution' on someone who is innocent? Heinous crimes are on the increase plus this incident make me wonder whether Malaysian Society is deteriorating into a state of 'Lawlessness'! What can our Police do to protect law abiding citizens? As for the detention food issue, it was reported in the local News that only RM $4.50 per day was allocated for food! It works out to be approximately US $1.30 per day for food! I guess even the poor in our Nation eats more than US $1.30 per day! The amount is barely sufficient to cover the cost of a simple meal let alone for a day! I think it would be much humane to shoot them or hang them rather than to torture them this way! It may work out to be cheaper. Perhaps now we can understand why certain NGO's are accusing our Nation for infringement on Human Rights! I sincerely believe that although they may be 'criminals' under detention but it is still a basic human right to decent food! Now our famous blogger of Malaysia Kini, Raja Petra Kamaruddin or RPK is sentenced to 2 years detention without trial under ISA and I guess he is experiencing the ISA Fast! Let's pray and uphold RPK and his family during such trying times and pray that justice be done in his case and there will be an option for his case to be heard soon! Hey! how about sending him a Hari Raya Card to cheer him up and show him some moral support? The address is as shown below:-

Mat-Rempits Terror

July 14, 2008 | Leave a Comment

I am supposed to be back blogging on Tuesday but alas due to the long tennis matched of the Wimbledon Men's Singles final that stretched to nearly 5 hours, finishing around 4.45 am I just had to take the day off and tried to get back to my normal sleep routine after two weeks of late nights watching the competition.

When I get online today, I was shocked by this piece of news sent to me by a friend. Apparantly 14 'Mat-Rempits' robbed and beat-up 4 ladies at a Bangsar Petrol Kiosk at 3.30 am last Saturday morning. What a shame on these youths gone wild! Bullying four helpless ladies who stopped by to refuel. It seems the workers at the Petrol Kiosk stayed inside the office and just watched the drama unfolding! None of them dare to come out to help. The whole drama was video taped by the CCTV on-site and now the Police are investigating!

So folks, especially ladies, try not to refuel at such early hours and just looked out for these 'gangsters' and if you see them hanging around don't get out of your car, just drive straight home and forget about what you intended to do for your own safety. The 'Mat-Rempit' problem is really getting out of hand and try as hard as I could, I just cannot fathom why the Police are unable to do anything to curb these hooligans on our roads. They are getting bolder now and heard too many robberies, mugging cases by them.

Unite For Human Rights!

May 15, 2008 | 3 Comments

Today 15th May 2008 is the "Unite For Human Rights Day!". My take on this in our Malaysian context is about freedom of speech of bloggers in our beloved Nation. The recent arrest of famous blogger RPK reflects our current status. Many have read the writings of RPK but not many know about his better-half Marina Lee! Oh! the anguish she and her family go through the whole ordeal and the way they were treated by the authorities!
Posted here is an excerpt of Marina's Ordeal during RPK's few days in prison!

Is Parliament Still Relevant? when freedom of speech is being brutally subverted by the present regime and false charges can be instituted against anyone, who dares to demand for justice and truth?"As a wife and mother, I want to know from my fellow citizens whether a government that has incarcerated my husband at the Sungai Buloh Prison on trumped-up charges and brought untold suffering on my family, especially when one of my daughters is sitting for her final examinations, is a legitimate. No wife, mother or child should have to go through this horrible experience when all her beloved husband did was to uphold justice and truth. On May 2 2008, the 'Armed Might' of the regime was unleashed on my family when they came to my house in search of evidence for some alleged crime that my husband was supposed to have committee. I thought that this can only happen in a Gestapo state but not in my beloved Malaysia. You'd be the judge of this The police came in the morning and desecrated the sanctity of my home for the fourth time. The fact that this had occurred previously does not make it any easier for my daughter and I.I wish that such nightmares can be forgotten, but let me tell you, especially mothers and wives, that the pain will never go away and that it is only our family's self esteem and strength and our faith in God that has enabled us to withstand and overcome the trauma and pain that we have suffered together.I pray that no mother and wife will have to suffer and experience what I had with my beloved husband and my family. Before we had time to recover our composure, the police handed us a summons to appear before the CCID the following day. However at 3:15pm, we received a call to appear at 4:00pm on the same day.My suspicion for this sudden change in the time for my husband to be interrogated was to prevent publicity and the exposure of their dastardly deeds. Can anyone of you imagine what I, as a wife and mother, had to go through emotionally and psychologically when accompanying my husband to be interrogated by the police when on a previous occasion in 2000, he was brutally assaulted in my presence? I could not express my anxiety to my husband on the way to the CCID, as I know that my strength and resoluteness would be critical to enable my husband to face his interrogators. He must have also felt the same for me and so both of us, thinking alike kept our silence. But we were determined to see this through together come hell or high water. The Petras' are not some tofus!! We have enough strength and dignity to overcome such adversity. My daughter suffered in silence and despite her age, she held up magnificently and no mother can be prouder than I to have such a daughter. As we approached the CCID, tears welled in my eyes, but they were not tears of fear, sadness or trepidation, but the expression of my determination and faith that my husband's struggle will ensure a better future for my daughter and the children of a better Malaysia. I am proud to say that my husband overcame the intrigues and schemes and came out unscathed. But we knew that this was a mere prelude to more brutality that will be inflicted on my family. The events of yesterday's circus are known to all. But what was most telling was the deafening silence of the judiciary and the Bar Council, which supposedly are the guardians of justice and equality. The dinner that was orchestrated by Pak Lah, his Law Minister and other cronies that allegedly ushered "a new era" for an independent and fearless judiciary in upholding justice and human rights, makes me wonder if such an institution that was promised was a fantasy in light of my experience. Today, my daughter and I went to the Sungai Buloh Prison to visit my husband but we were told that he had no wish to see anyone, not even any member of the family or lawyers. I was shocked and disturbed by this turn of events as it can only mean that my husband is determined to endure the pain of incarceration and humiliation of being subjected to and treated like a common criminal for upholding the freedom of speech and justice. Being married to him for 35 years, I know only too well that he is capable of making sacrifices for truth, justice and freedom. I suspect that when I was told that he did not want to see me, that he would be taking the ultimate step - to go on a hunger strike to demonstrate his determination to uphold the cause of truth and justice.I have nothing more to say, as I am thoroughly exhausted by the turn of events and can only hope and pray that my fellow citizens, especially wives and mothers out there, that you would all come together to protest and to demand for my beloved husband's freedom and that you will call upon your Member of Parliament to boycott Parliament as a gesture of support for my husband's struggle. His struggle must not be in vain. We as a family will see this through but we will only be able to cope if we know that good and God-fearing people like you will be there and standing together with us shoulder to shoulder to strike a fatal blow against tyranny and for justice and truth and for my husband's freedom.

Housing Woes of the Poor

April 10, 2008 | 2 Comments

What I am pondering now after the dismantling of the Barisan Power in our recent General Elections is the possibility of the Local Authorities coming down hard on dubious Property Developers who sold sub-standard, very poor quality houses to the general public. From experience, quality of houses built currently is of poor quality as compared to houses built in the early 70’s and 80’s! I have been to many house warming and I was shocked by the poor workmanship, from plastering to plumbing to electrical works etc, etc. I have seen sewerage pipes exposed, running down from upstairs along the wall and disappeared back into the wall! Even some door frames were crooked but the door still fits! I am sure you can guess how! Am I right here? Do you people, especially fellow Malaysians agree with me?

This even happened lately to supposedly up market properties like Condominiums in the City Centre. My own brother had a rather nasty experience in one piece of low cost property he purchased nearly 8 years ago. It was so bad that the issue was highlighted in the local newspapers but as far as I know nothing was done and the people continued to suffer in agony over their pathetic homes. Can you imagine that handed over properties without water supply? The pipes and taps were there except no water supply! Residents had to get their daily supply from public taps on a daily basis and doing that for nearly 2 years! No wonder they took the matter up. I did not follow up and so do not have further facts of the case, whether there were any compensation, make good the faults etc. As far as I know, there were no Certificate of Fitness issued when owners took the keys to their new homes then. Surprise, surprise! Apa macam pun boleh jadi di-sini!

From observation, it seems that the middle and lower costs homes have more of such problems than the upper middle class or expensive houses! I guess these deviant developers dared not take on these educated and rich owners for fear of getting sued! It looks like they bully the poor because the poor could not afford the costly affair of bringing them to court. Many of these are hawkers or petty traders and they really do not have the time, a fear of and understanding of the intricacies involved in going to Court. Moreover they accepted it with disgruntled resignation, having a sense of being bullied, for if they do not move into the house, they might have to rent a place somewhere and this will be added expenses in addition to servicing their bank loans.

Lately there was a call for the Local Authorities to seriously look into incomplete housing projects! Yes you guess it, those lower cost apartments or flats. The developer had either absconded or gone bust, I am not sure but these poor people are still servicing the loans but with no home to expect or in view for many years! What a shame this is. It looked like the average income group and the poor have to suffer all these atrocities not due to any fault of theirs. Let’s hope that the Authorities, Banks and new Developers who undertake to revive these abandoned projects, can find a workable solution in order to alleviate the financial strain on the poor! Would love to see this happening soon! A challenge to the newly elected Opposition Coalition State Governments who proclaimed anti-corruption and serving the masses!
