Living in Fear
In the first case, it happened with some others around but these people were either too stunned or shocked that they did nothing. The woman was approached by two men forcing her to unlock her car with the intention of driving her away in her own car. I dared not think of what could have happened if these two men succeeded! Could be just robbery or a triple crime of rape, murder and robbery! Fortunately that woman had the presence of mind to run when the opportunity came and she escaped. The two men also fled the scene immediately.
The second incident was quite astounding in the sense that it was not robbery but rather two people on motor-bikes approached this mom and two kids, demanding her to give them the youngest kid while having a knife pointed at her. The mom screamed and shouted for help and when the neighbours came out to investigate, the two sped away. Reminded me of the recent spade of crimes involving children being kidnapped sexually molested and murdered.
From such brazen criminal activities, it indicated that safety and security is getting to an alarming level. Its not even safe for moms to bring their kids out to play! Both incidents happened in broad day light with other people around. I can understand that people around may not get involved mainly because they do not understand what is happening more than anything else. Of course there is an element of personal safety involved but mostly I believe that without knowing what is really happening people are reluctant to get involved. Another reason being the surprise factor which usually make one immobilized or in shock.
I am amazed at the boldness of these criminals. Perhaps they know that people around are slow to react to the calls for help and so they are convinced that it would be over in less than a minute! Perhaps they also know that there is a lack of security personnels (who are trained to respond to such situations) around making them bold. I believe our Police Force and Management of shopping malls must seriously come out with effective patrolling or else, our play grounds and shopping malls will be shunned by people. How do you like to live with such fear daily! Dare not go anywhere but stay at home!
