I am Sad.
I am feeling upset since yesterday after learning about the teenager whose mom died in a private hospital where she was brought in after an accident on the road. It was not her passing away that upsets me most although I am not numbed in my senses because these cases happened everyday but rather the circumstances how his mom died.
From local newspapers report, this boy is going to take legal action against the hospital for refusing to treat his mom until he pays a fee or deposit of ten thousand dollars! Obviously this poor boy could not raise the funds and in the course of raising the money? Or perhaps begging the medical personnels, his mom passed away. I really do not know what to say. I can undersatnd why private hospital insists on payment first before treatment because there are quite a few cases where after treatment, the patient cannot pay.
What I feel upset is to see this trend happening in my life time. Back in the 60’s 70’s or even 80’s most people go to the Government Hospital and receive cheap and even free medical treatment. Especially in cases like accidents, emergencies, no one demands payment upfront. They just do their job and that is try to save a life. I can also understand why hospitals are privatized and so there was a surge of private hospitals mushrooming in my country. Health Insurance become a necesity due to the high cost of medical treatment. For whatever the reason, I empathize with this boy having to see his mom slipped into death and totally helpless to do anything. I just wonder how the medical people there felt. I remembered a movie titled John Q, where John had a similar experience and he held-up the hospital to demand treatment for his son!
How will this incident affect this boy? A hatred or should I say rebel against Society, Government, Hospital or maybe Authorities. Perhaps to him money becomes so very very important and he become obssesed with it and obtain money by whatever means, telling himself that he will never be caught in such a situation again? I don’t know. Hopefully his hurting soul receives healing from a Gracious God.
Today, I see this happening in real life and in my country. I do not want to dig into the pro’s and con’s, the rights and the wrongs of this issue! I understand there are many. What I want to know is morally, can we allow such things to happen? Because of money? For being right? I don’t have an answer and I can only feel very sad in my conscience. So God please help me.
Got something to say?
