Malaysian Constitution on Trial

On 30th May 2007, our highest court decision on Lina Joy’s case will be announced. Many Malaysians are very keen to know what the outcome will be. In Malaysia there are two sets of Law, one is the Islamic Syariah Law and the other our Constitutional Law.

Lina Joy’s case started in 1998 where as an ex-Muslim, she wanted her National Identity Card to reflect her new Faith which is Christianity. Lina was previously a Muslim. Her application for that changed was denied and hence the court case which went on for several years now.

If you want to have more details on this please visit Eileen Ng at Associated Press.

To me the outcome on Wednesday is more of our Malaysian Constitution being on Trial because according to our Constitution, freedom of worship is granted to each and every citizen of Malaysia.
