Is Malaysia Becoming A Failed State?

I am not happy with how things are going in Malaysia. It used to be such a lovely, harmonious and peaceful place. People of the various races live harmoniously, showing great tolerance and a strong sense of unity.

Slowly I see this changing and lately the trend is rather deplorable. Our Malaysian society is now less tolerant of others especially in the area of race and religion and even political affiliation. Much of what is happening are blamed on the ruling Government Coalition (Barisan or BN which is controlled by UMNO, a Malay Party as well as the predominant Party) who is playing the race and religion sentiments to hold back the Malays from defecting to the Opposition Coalition.

The Government controlled Media continuously churn out racist and hateful articles to stir up the emotions. What is so upsetting is the bias that the BN is showing towards their own Media. If it is the Chinese or Indian Media who published such articles, surely their license would be suspended which had happened several times before. This bias is rather glaring and the Government controlled Media continues to spew out hateful racist publications without even a hint of reprimand from the Government implied approval from the Government.

Ever since the March 8th General Elections in 2008 with the BN loosing several States to the Opposition, the voices of change from the people were ignored by BN. Instead, they used every trick and treachery to topple the Opposition controlled States. It look like nobody is running the country when everyone is preoccupied with politics and we are facing serious challenges in terms of financial hardships, rising crimes in our cities, corruption in the Government, Judiciary, Police and Anti-Corruption Agency.

The not too long ago 'Cow Head Fiasco' indicates the social breakdown in our community and the tolerance level is on the decline. The protest march and the failed dialogue with the State Government showed the ugly side of Malaysians. For details you can read the episode HERE.

To ordinary citizen like me, the minorities in Malaysia, I feel let down by my Government in the way they handle such issues. I do not trust their shouts of 1Malaysia when simple issue of re-locating a Hindu Temple can caused such a huge protest and the reasons given were so lame or maybe because they do not have any real reasons except that they just do not want a Hindu Temple in a predominantly Malay Muslim area. So there goes tolerance and religious understanding in our multi-cultural society. As recent as yesterday, certain groups can come out saying racists things and threatening violence in public and they were not even stopped by the law enforcement. The silence from the Government does not help at all. You can watch the video on this Here! although it was in our National Language.

I am loosing my fire in blogging due to all these worrying trends. How can one not concerned with such going on's?
