My Treasure Box

October 2, 2008 | Leave a Comment

I am sure many of you do have a 'treasure box' where you keep your most precious gifts, collectibles and some sentimental knick-knacks! Hey! Rock used to keep all my love letters written to her when I was studying in UK while she stayed back in Malaysia! They are still in her treasure box which is a shoe box really! Once in awhile we read some of those silly letters and enjoyed a good laugh over them! Sadly, I never kept any of hers! Men!

Well, this post serves to satisfy my buddy EastCoastLife who tagged me sometime back on a Meme about pouring out all the contents in my purse and take a photo. Alas for men, we have very few items in our wallets! Ladies are different and my Gosh! you'll find some interesting things there! Check out your girl friend's or wife's purse and you'll be surprise! Please ask her permission first to avoid surprises! Haha! I would!

So what I have in my treasure box? Ancient Stuff mostly. Take a look at some photos shown below :-

Mom's Lighter from the 40's

Dad's Lighter from the 50's

Ivory Chop-sticks

My 1968 Slide Rule

Mom's 1930's Trinket Box

Victorian Ashtray 1847

Oil Lamp of the 40's

Valve Radio of the 30's

Finally most precious of all is a 20 year old photo taken by Rock who caught me sleeping with a young girl! Hahaha!

Numbers

July 23, 2008 | Leave a Comment

What comes to your mind when you read the word 'Numbers'! Firstly to me its one of the first 5 Books in the Old Testament, also in the Jewish Torah! Lately it is a Detective Series shown on Astro! Numbers has great significance in our world. Literally everything is classified by a series of numbers, from products to human beings ( IC No. or Passport No.). also this leads into a complex issue such as Mark of the beast as mentioned in the Bible! Well, thats not what I really want to share on.

Well, to the Chinese, Numbers has great significance! Look at all the expensive cars locally, they all have 'nice numbers' to the Chinese I mean, for to the other races they don't mean a thing! I used to have a h/p No. which was the envy of my friends! It was "8881688"! This year the Olympics is going to be hosted in Beijing and opens on 8th August 2008 or "888"! Eight is a number which sounds like the word Prosperity in Chinese or Cantonese. It is rather unusual and I guess many Chinese think it is auspicious to have it on that day with the significance of "888"!

Well on a personal scale we got a rather unique appointment date with the hospital too! Rock's routine check-up is going to be on 8th August 2008 at 8 am! so it is "8888"! Wow! Enough of that for now I want to give some numbers to a buddy East Coast Life who is in the running for the Most Entertaining Blog in Singapore! hey friends, do give her your vote will you? Beside being a buddy she really writes a very interesting as well as entertaining blog! I admire her courage and boldness to take on the Singapore Civil Services single-handed! New Year’s Traditions

January 7, 2008 | 3 Comments

Life is Mysterious tagged me on this one 'New Year's Traditions'. I guess some clarifications needed here for New Year here refers to the Lunar New Year or commonly Chinese New Year which is round the corner and falls on 7th or 8th Feburary 2008! Chinese have lots of traditions depending on your creed, ie Cantonese, Hakka etc and from which Province in China you originated from. As for me, a Cantonese from Guanzhou here are some which I learned from my parents :-
Firstly the Rules : Copy the person and persons’ names that sent it to you and add your own at the bottom of the list. It really helps to build community. Lets start it here! *We must have the Reunion Dinner on the Eve and once the clock strikes 12 midnight, we start with the first meal on the first day! Guess for Chinese having food is all so important and its a basic human need too. *The next important thing is to wish your parents and elders all the good things that you can think of! We never miss this part for in return we receive 'Red Packets' which contain MONEY! Guess the next important thing in life! *Everyone goes their own way, meaning to the gambling tables and their favorite game be it Cards or Mah Jong and hope to win more with the money given to you! Enterprising Chinese! I always loose! Arrgh! *Of course, traditionally no one sweeps the floor on the first day of New Year for fear of sweeping away the luck that came with the season! Well for me, I guess I will sweep so that I sweep away all the bad luck and hope to win at the tables! *On the Seventh Day commonly known as Birthday for those who do not know their date of birth! On this day it is traditional to have a meal of Raw Fish mixed with veges and chips! *Traditionally the New Year lasts for 15 days! and I am blur on what to do and what not to do after the third day! All I remembered was the continuous gambling sessions the feasts and of course the Red Packets which are our source of funds for our investments! Heck! this is the only time in the year where minors are allowed to make some money from gambling! Dora; Bokjae................................................... Wonder what it will be like for David Bong; Trinity; Judylesse and Genelim.

Categories of Friends

October 28, 2007 | 4 Comments

A buddy of mine, sent me an article on The Power of Gratitude and it was a very good read indeed. Since I was disconnected from the internet for about a week, I did some reflecting on what I have learned from that article. Then maezy another good friend, sent me something on appreciating your friends which was really an eye-opener and would like to share that here.

Friends generally come in three categories. Some come into your life for a Lifetime, some for a Season and they disappear, some just drop-in for a Reason. I remembered missing a very good friend (PC) and spiritual mentor and when he migrated to Canada, initially I felt betrayed, a bit of anger and disappointment then. Do you have a similar experience? The saying that it is hard to say good-bye is so true.

Through the years as I matured emotionally, I begin to understand, these three categories and it was liberating to say the least. I realized now that if we understand which category our friends come under, it will grant us the understanding on how to relate to them and enjoy our relationship to the fullest. Our good-byes will be sweet, unforgettable and fills our hearts with such gratitude for the friendship.

Those that come into your life and stay for a lifetime are usually the ones we grew up with right from primary school to college. They are there whether it rains or shines and they are there at your wedding, anniversaries etc. They are your continuous source of encouragement, enjoyment and till death do us part sort of friends.

Then there are those who come into your life for a season, where now it is your turn to share, to grow with or learn. They bring you an experience of tranquility or make you laugh. They may teach you something you have never done. They usually give you an unbelievable amount of joy and happiness. But they are there only for a season.

I am sure many of you do have friends who just come into your life for a reason. Be it some sort of ‘angel-like’ person who was with you through a difficult patch in your life, giving you support, guidance, a sweet and warm friendship. Then suddenly they disappear either due to circumstances, relocation, migration etc and that’s the end of that relationship apart from the occasional emails or letters, like PC. What we must realize is that our need has been met and their role completed and now it is time to move on.

All these three categories of relationships are the building blocks of a solid emotional foundation. I believe that it is our unction to accept the lessons, appreciate and be grateful for that person’s impact in our lives and propagate this friendship to all those who come into our lives afterwards.

Lastly, I must mentioned another category of friends who are like “spirits” for they suddenly come into your life, into the privacy of your own room. You may never meet them physically the rest of your days. They are the Bloggers! I was so touched by one who, even on holiday remembered me and a few others, ‘carved’ my name with corals under the clear waters of the sea! Such are the simple pleasures and joy of friendships that come into our lives.

All that I can say, with gratitude is “Thank you for being a part of my life, whether you were a reason, a season or a lifetime.”
